The intention of the following report is to analyze a representation of the battle of Las Piedras, taking into account the methodological challenge of the use of iconographic sources for the historian and the new points of view that the use of images brings to historical studies. In view of the semiotic heterogeneity of textual narrative and iconographic production, written records are used to offer the reader an introduction to the historical event and to open the analysis of the reproduction under examination. As a conclusion, it will focus on the capacity and efficiency of the image to promote in the observer of the nineteenth century the identification and appropriation of a heroic deed and to stimulate the creation of an incipient national feeling.
