Editorial Policies
Antigua Matanza Journal Editorial Policy
The journal Antigua Matanza prioritizes scientific rigor and transparency throughout the entire editorial process. To this end, it provides the community with the Manual of Good Practices, created with the intention of making this work visible and promoting organized actions and clear, verifiable guidelines for all parties involved.
The main editorial principles are detailed below.
Focus and Scope
Antigua Matanza is a publication of the Board of Historical Studies of the Department of University Extension of the Universidad Nacional de La Matanza (UNLaM), aimed at disseminating original scientific knowledge in the field of History, focusing specifically on regional history.
The journal is presented as an open-access academic publication available to the entire community, published biannually. Submitted articles will be reviewed by the editorial board to ensure they align with the general themes of the journal and comply with editorial guidelines. They will then undergo evaluation by the scientific committee through a double-blind peer review system to determine the academic quality and originality of the ideas presented by the authors. There are no charges for article submission, processing, or publication for authors and/or institutions.
The journal targets established and emerging researchers in history, humanities, social sciences, and professionals interested in the defense of cultural and natural heritage in general.
Publication Frequency
The journal publishes its issues semi-annually. The first issue covers the period from June 20th to December 19th of the current year; the second issue covers the period from December 20th of the current year to June 19th of the following year.
The publication of the journal issue occurs at the beginning of each period, adhering to the defined frequency.
However, with the intention of expediting the dissemination and publication times of articles that have already been accepted, peer-reviewed, and revised by authors based on reviewers' suggestions, the final versions of these articles are deposited in a section called 'Upcoming Issues: Final Version.' In this section, the editorial team commits to depositing the articles in their Final Published Version in PDF format, intended for upcoming publications of Antigua Matanza. Subsequently, to maintain publication frequency, articles from this section will be paginated and incorporated into a specific volume and issue.
Language
The journal publishes articles in Spanish. Manuscripts must be submitted in Spanish. Additionally, authors are required to provide the title, abstract, and keywords in English (machine translation is discouraged).
Originality Requirement
Submissions should present original research or significant advancements from initial production. If applicable, authors must clearly indicate the original research and the degree or percentage of innovation. Repetitive research presentations, such as articles using data or entire paragraphs (verbatim or paraphrased) from previous works without proper referencing and without demonstrating progress related to the initial issues proposed, are discouraged.
Sections
Antigua Matanza features seven permanent sections, each with specific and defined objectives.
When submitting their manuscript, authors should note that the order of each section in the journal's table of contents remains unchanged from one issue to the next. The suggested article length corresponds to the objectives of each section. Authors are advised that the editorial team may suggest publishing the article in a different section than initially proposed.
Following each section, the scope, types of submissions accepted, and recommended length are detailed:
Section 1: Historical Inquiries
Scope: Original works within regional history (authors must specify the region under study).

Manuscript Management Process
A manuscript is considered to be in the editorial process from the moment it is received by the Editorial Committee until it is published online or rejected. This phase will have a maximum duration of six (6) months.
An article that has been accepted, peer-reviewed, and revised by the authors based on the reviewers' suggestions will be published in the section: "Upcoming Issues: Final Version". In this space, the editorial team commits to depositing articles in their final published version, i.e., formatted articles designated for upcoming publications of Antigua Matanza. Subsequently, they will be paginated and included in a volume and issue.
Article Review (Pre-review and Peer Review)
A manuscript is considered in the editorial process from the moment it is received by the Editorial Committee until its publication (either in an issue or its final version). This phase will have a maximum duration of six months.
Pre-review: Upon receipt of the article, an associate editor from the Editorial Committee verifies the relevance of the article concerning the journal's overall theme and the specific section. Subsequently, an executive editor ensures compliance with the author guidelines included in the Submission section.
This stage may last up to one (1) month.
Peer Review Process: Manuscripts submitted to the various sections will undergo evaluation.
Only articles that have passed the pre-review stage will be sent to external evaluators who are part of the scientific committee.
Articles will be reviewed under a double-blind system, meaning that neither the evaluator nor the author will know each other's identities.
The evaluation must adhere to the form provided by Antigua Matanza (which can be consulted in detail here) and should consider the following criteria:
- Presentation: The coherence and cohesion of the manuscript.
- Ethics: Detailed contributions to the manuscript and sources of information used.
- Originality and relevance: The article presents a pertinent and original discussion on the research topic.
- Scholarship: The bibliography used is considered appropriate and up-to-date.
- Methodological validity: The manuscript presents valid data and an appropriate and pertinent methodological instrument. The use of theory is sufficient and appropriate.
- Presentation of achieved results: The conclusions reached correspond to the data and analysis conducted.
The review result may be:
- Satisfactory: The article is suitable for publication.
- Satisfactory with comments: The article is approved for publication pending modification of the comments indicated by the evaluator.
- Unsatisfactory: The article is not suitable for publication.
The reviewer's decision is communicated to the author through a message. (Maximum review time: 1 month).
If the article is accepted, the Editorial Committee makes any necessary style corrections and informs the author that it is moving to the Manuscript Management Finalization stage.
If revisions are required, all instructions are sent and the author is requested to resubmit the article (maximum correction time: 1 month). The Editorial Committee must be attentive to assisting the author with any difficulties encountered during this stage.
If the manuscript is rejected, the author is informed of the result and the rationale behind it.
It should be noted that referees do not make the final decision on which articles are published; it is the Editorial Committee that ultimately decides and is responsible to the community for publication.
Conflict of Interest
There can be various reasons that generate conflicts of interest, for example, conflicting institutional ties or being related to the funding of the research from which the article originates, or when any party has certain interests, beliefs, or ethical practices that they believe may affect their objectivity or perspective to influence their final decisions. In such cases, it must be promptly reported to the editor and/or editorial team of the journal.
Additionally, the reviewer must declare themselves unable to provide their opinion, honestly, when they are familiar with the work, either because they have been involved in it, even tangentially, or do not agree with the manuscript for professional or personal reasons, or simply recognize a proximity to the author.
If there are doubts about a potential conflict of interest regarding the manuscript, the reasons for these concerns should be communicated to the Editorial Committee and await their resolution.
Nevertheless, if you disagree with the response and prefer to do so, you may withdraw from the evaluation.

Subsequently, through paragraph-by-paragraph review, the editorial team ensures that there is no content already published without adequate authorship reference. During the pre-review process, the editorial team identifies missing or incomplete references and works with the author on the correct use of APA 7th edition citation and referencing system.
The editorial team utilizes Plagiarisma as a tool to assist in plagiarism detection.
Procedure upon detection of possible plagiarism
The Director will convene a meeting with the Editorial Committee to discuss, investigate, and analyze the evidence presented and seek a resolution regarding the ethical breach. If the editorial team determines that the breach is not of serious nature, the author will be invited to discuss and provide an explanation regarding the situation.
If the Director and the Editorial Committee decide to conduct a more extensive investigation, the author will always have the opportunity to respond to the allegations made against them. The entire process will be conducted with utmost confidentiality.
If it is determined that the author has committed a serious offense such as plagiarism, simultaneous submissions, duplicate publication, authorship disputes, etc., the following actions may be taken as decided by the Director and the Editorial Committee:
a. Notify the author's institutional affiliation entity/entities supporting the research and/or its funding bodies.
b. Send a letter to the author(s) indicating the ethical misconduct, as a precedent for future good behavior.
c. Publish an editorial in the journal detailing the improper conduct, showcasing the evidence gathered during the investigation process.
d. Correct or modify errors, or if necessary, withdraw the article from the journal's website.
e. Notify the author that they will be unable to publish in Antigua Matanza Journal for a specified period.
f. Publicly expose the ethical misconduct through necessary media channels.
Best Practices Related to the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The editorial team of Antigua Matanza Journal upholds a commitment to transparency and honesty throughout the editorial process, therefore:
1. Authors must disclose if they have used AI-assisted technologies in the production of the submitted manuscript. If used, authors are required to justify its use in both the cover letter and within the manuscript itself, specifying the tools, methods of use, and outcomes obtained. Particularly, if AI has assisted in drafting or editing the submitted article, it should be acknowledged in a footnote as a form of gratitude. Under no circumstances should AI be incorporated as an author of the submitted article.
2. Editors and reviewers, on their part, agree not to utilize AI for the pre-review and review of submitted articles.
3. Reviewers will be informed of the use of AI in the submitted article at the time of their invitation for evaluation.
4. Editors, in turn, hold final responsibility for the editing of articles published in their issues.
